We are thrilled to be contributing a piece to this auction/fundaiser: Reclaim NYC. New York City’s design community is teaming up to raise money for those affected by Hurricane Sandy with an auction of furniture created from materials reclaimed or salvaged after the storm and of pieces inspired by the flooding. December 19, 2012, from 7-9 p.m. at Ligne Roset’s SoHo showroom at 155 Wooster Street.

Sustainable Sourcing

All of our work begins with the tree. We salvage select “dead and down” logs one at a time from local tree services, parks departments and local landowners and transport them to our Orange County, NY sawmill and drying barn. A perishable material, logs wood must be processed carefully and quickly before milling to avoid deterioration. End grain must be sealed, bark removed carefully by hand, and the log stored off the ground and away from the sun. Typical processing time from log to finished piece of furniture is two years, after the material has been gently and thoroughly air dried and then kiln dried.

Most logs that we use are from trees that grew for 75 years or longer and have a diameter of at least 20 inches. Each one unique.

Milling

We mill our own logs. Carefully and to make the best of the unique features in each tree. Opening a log is always a revelation, revealing burls, knots, colors and textures that have been deposited over the life of the tree. No two are ever alike.

Drying

All of our material is air-dried in our dedicated drying barn for approximately two years before we kiln dry it and bring it to the workshop in Beacon. Each board that comes off the sawmill is tagged with a code that identifies its species, source, cut date and position within the log. Knowing the sequence of boards in each flitch enables us to match color and grain when it comes time to make a piece of furniture. At any given time, we have approximately 10,000 board feet of wood in our drying barn.

Slab Selection and Table Sizing

Each piece of wood in our studio is carefully marked to indicate its original location in the log and stored “in the boule”, i.e. as it was originally oriented in the tree. This makes it possible to do grain and color matching in the final piece of furniture.

We encourage client visits to our studio to select material from our 10,000+ board foot inventory.

Natural Edge Options

One of the joys of working with natural-edge material, is that no two logs are alike. We love to “read the tree” and select interesting details to emphasize in our designs. We distinguish ourselves from other “natural-edge” woodworkers by being rigorous about using the actual edge of the tree. The true sinews, curves and growth rings in the edge can be exquisitely elegant. A gorgeous natural edge table reflects the way the material has been handled. Commercially processed logs are lifted using large machines with hooks and teeth that destroy the outer edge. We handle our logs with care, with a focus on preserving the natural edge of the tree. Each board is ‘de-barked’ by hand before stacking it up to dry. This discourages insects and fungus from growing in the nutrient-rich cambium layer just below the bark.

Finding and featuring the most intruiging aspects of the log is our passion.
